Nielsen recently posted some interesting statistics on their blog about the high rate of abandonment of new Twitter users. According to their research, more than 60 percent of U.S. Twitter users fail to return the following month. In other words, there are a lot of Twitter quitters out there. With all the current celebrity Twitter hype, this number could increase as more people join just to follow a favorite celebrity or see what the buzz is all about.
I admit that when I first signed up for Twitter, I wasn’t a huge fan. Other forms of social media generated a much bigger payoff for me and that’s where I concentrated my efforts. With Twitter now in the spotlight, I decided to give it another try. In just several days of more frequent tweeting, I’ve received two media inquiries and reconnected with a former colleague.
The key for business users of Twitter is to figure out how to make this medium work as an effective business tool. How do you avoid the overwhelm of inane chatter, focus on what’s relevant, promote without selling, and make a meaningful contribution to the Twitterverse, all at the same time?
